Meet Elizabeth, Mauricio & Marina

Via ResiRest we were invited into the home of a local Mexican family in Playa Del Carmen. At the meeting point Elizabeth and her 14yo daughter, Marina, greeted us with a big smile. They showed us around their compound, were we went to the local shop to get some do-it-yourself tortilla dough.

In their home the father of the family, Mauricio, welcomed us. Marina, the daughter, served us home made Agua de Jamaica (hibiscus tea), which was delicious. Elizabeth shared the impressive menu with us:

  • Local fresh fish in banana leaves with onion, paprika, chili, tomato and garlic.
  • Grilled pork in a fresh salsa with potatoes.
  • Tortillas (which we baked together!)
  • Chicken in a spiced creamy red sauce.
  • Fresh guacamole with cilantro
  • Rice with tomatos.
  • Different kinds of home made chili sauces (too spicy for us though)
  • Dessert: sweet pumpkin with star anise and cinnamon.

As we asked to be involved in the cooking, there was a lot that we could help with. We started with preparing the fish in the banana leaves. After that Elizabeth showed us how she makes the salsa for the pork, amazingly simple and yet so delicious.

Finally, as a Mexican mother she doesn't use a tortilla maker, but flattens and forms the tortillas by hand. A little contest showed us that we couldn't get close to her quality of tortilla making, and that Mitchel is definitely better off getting ready made ones.

After a fantastic lunch we were surprised by a present from the daughter, Marina. She made a banana bread, for which the oven was timed to be done when it was time for dessert. So not only were we served delicious sweet pumpkin, but also a fresh warm banana bread.

To be honest, for just the banana bread we would come back! Everything else would an amazing bonus. Long story short, we are in love with Elizabeth, Mauricio, and Marina. We recommend anyone who is visiting Playa Del Carmen in Mexico to visit this amazing family.

Before saying goodbye, we learned that we were the first visitors from ResiRest for this family, how cool is that?!

Elizabeth, Mauricio and Marina, keep up the good work!
