It was over six months ago that we announced our partnership with ResiRest, a Dutch Social Enterprise focused on making local and sustainable impact. We are very excited to share that we have visited the first family connected to ResiRest.

What is ResiRest?

ResiRest is a Dutch Social Enterprise who connects local families with travellers. At first the focus was only to connect to travellers via travel agencies, but since '21 it is also possible for travellers to directly book an experience with a ResiRest family.

Truly local experiences?

Find it challenging to have an authentic local experience? ResiRest offers the solution. ResiRest works together with local coordinator to collaborate with local families. Families are limited to a maximum of one booking per week, to prevent it becoming a touristic attraction.

What does it cost?

A this moment, booking a local experience with ResiRest is charged €20,- per person. You can decide whether you want meat, fish, vegetarian or a surprise. This fee is used to pay the local families an above average compensation and to allow ResiRest to grow as a social enterprise.

Dinner with Sandra and Jorge

ResiRest invited us to have dinner with Sandra and Jorge in Playa del Carmen, Mexico. We went with Nadia's parents, so the four of us in total. Jorge picked us up at the rendezvous point and drove us to their house, just 3 minutes away.

After the introduction, Sandra put us to work and showed us how to prepare the food. On the menu was:

  • Fresh fish filet with spiced red sauce and vegetables
  • Rice with fresh cilantro and carrot
  • Home made guacamole
  • Purple corn tortillas

We wrapped the fish with the sauce and vegetables in banana leaves, so it could steam in the oven. Sandra had the other food already prepared, so Jorge had time to tell us about their lives, their home and how he was still looking so young (he was 72 years old!).

The dinner was amazing. The food was really good and fresh, Sandra and Jorge were amazing hosts and the experience was as ResiRest promised, authentic.

After dessert, which was baked banana with cream and maple syrup, we had a cup of very flavourful coffee, locally known as a delicacy.

Ever find yourself in Playa del Carmen? Go visit Sandra and Jorge!
